Proton and heavy ion therapy is known as a powerful weapon against cancer. Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center is the first medical institution in mainland China to simultaneously conduct clinical proton and heavy ion treatment, bringing new hope to many international cancer patients.
What is proton and heavy ion therapy
Proton and heavy ion therapy uses the unique physical properties of proton or heavy ion beams to precisely focus high-dose energy on the tumor, while protecting surrounding normal tissue to the greatest extent. For some refractory tumors, its efficacy surpasses conventional radiotherapy.
Applicable tumor types
Clinically used mainly for: head and neck tumors, brain tumors, skull base tumors, prostate cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, chordoma and others. For tumors that cannot be operated on or are insensitive to conventional radiotherapy, it offers a new option.
Treatment process
International patients generally submit medical records and imaging data for consultation and evaluation first, then arrange travel to Shanghai after confirmation. Treatment is usually delivered in multiple sessions of about 30 minutes each, without hospitalization, and patients can rest in apartments near the hospital.
Cost and insurance
The cost is relatively high, but still has a clear price advantage over equivalent treatment in Europe and the US. Some commercial insurances already cover related treatment, and patients are advised to confirm with their insurers in advance.
MedBridge assistance
MedBridge can assist international patients with treatment evaluation, booking, interpretation accompaniment and full coordination, making advanced treatment more accessible.
